While I was in San Diego, last week, I went to a Guitar Center at San Marcos. I was showing my teenage nephew some drums etc. I mentioned it in the DW9K post.
Anyway, an interesting happened, while I was there. I was trying pedals - especially the twins and set up at kits. I played a little, hating the sound of everything, except the Sabian cymbals.
Behind the counter, I could see that the phone had run and the guy behind it was talking. He started looking around. My nephew was playing at a digital kit.
He looks at me and motions me to come over -that it's for me.

I figure this must be my brother, who had dropped me off, while he went to Frye's (an electronics fortress out there).
When I picked up the phone, the guy asks, "Are you a drummer?"
I'm in the drum section of the Guitar Center.

The next thing he asks is "Are you a good drummer?"
"How am I supposed to answer that?", I respond.
He goes on. "Here's my problem - I am doing a session here and the drummer has not shown."
"Are you on the clock?", I ask.
He says, "Yes."
"This is likely not going to work out. I'm here, on vacation, with my brother, who's dropped his son off here, with me. I'm from Chicago. I don't know you. I haven't got any transportation and I'm going to be leaving town soon..."
"We're in Penescitos(?), just 10 minutes away.", he says. He adds, "We have a TV for your nephew too."
I asked, "What kind of tunes are they?"
He says, "They're three Gospel tunes."
"Hmm.."
My response was, "The only way this can happen is if my brother walks in the door, right now."
Guess what happens. My brother walks in the door.
"Well, OK. My brother just walked in..."
So, we start to work out the details and then he stops and says that they just got hold of the drummer and thanked me for my trouble.
It was an 'almost' happening.

Peter,
Do you mind revealing who these people were? I used to play in Rancho Penasquitos all the time with an R&B gospel band which had revolving members. I just wondered how small the world was.

..."OooooWOOOOooooooo..." [In my best comedian Robt Klein/'Carl Sagan cosmic' tone]
Very interesting story!...
I have a similar experience, where I came within less than 10 minutes to showtime of playing a show with Peter Noone & Herman's Hermits in OH, when their drummer [almost] didn't show...altho they were long since "off the charts," it was still interesting, nonetheless...
These things DO [& almost do] happen ENAT in 'real'-life, don't they Pete...

Frank,
Honestly, I don't know any more than
that. It took less then 10 minutes to
transpire, from start to finish.
Ask around. You might hear about it.
It was kind of funny.
The reason why I really considered it
at the end was because it was a Gospel
recording, if that registers with you
and I think it will.

Pete,
Read you loud and clear. I'll ask around, as I would love to play with these people again anyway.
Take Care. F.S.
